A Generosity Gap? Comparisons with the United States

Abstract This chapter examines changes in Canadian discourse on the relative generosity of Canadians and Americans. In welfare era, public through tax-funded programmes was a source national pride, as boasted higher levels collective provisioning for health, education, social welfare, arts compared to United States. late 1990s, began be reminded that we fall below U.S. measures private generosity. Whereas at one time, political left referred Canada’s “social advantage” over U.S., now right pointed “generosity gap” based lower rates charitable giving.
